Name: Damian Bariexca
How are you involved in education?
I’m a school psychologist at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, NJ. I’ve been a school psych for two years now; prior to that, I taught high school English for eight years. In my English classroom, I incorporated a variety of technological tools (“Web 2.0” and otherwise), the main purpose of which was to enable my students to collaborate effectively and publish their work to the outside world.
What’s your ideal classroom or school like?
One in which risk-taking is not only permitted, but actively encouraged and expected, for both students and faculty. Also, evaluation would be more student-driven, collaborative between student and teacher, and certainly not restrained to the current letter grade system.
Have you ever attended an unconference before?
Educon 2.2 in Philly this past January was my first unconference.
If you were to lead a session at Edcamp, what would it be about?
I imagine it would either be on free tools for teachers available on the web or free and low-cost (sense a theme here?) technological tools to assist students with special needs (which, really, is every student). I could also do a “stump Damian” session, where people came to me with specific issues or questions regarding tech in the classroom and I worked with them to develop a solution to their problem.
