Meet Deven Black, Teacher Librarian

If you’d like to be featured in our Meet the Edcampers series, fill out this form!

How are you involved in education?
I’m the teacher-librarian at a middle school in New York City.

What’s your ideal classroom or school like?
My ideal classroom doesn’t exist because the school it is in doesn’t exist. Ideally, learning should be an exchange between individuals. I want to learn something and you have the ability to teach it to me. Perhaps I have to pay you (individually or through taxes somehow) or I can barter by teaching you something in return. No more learning factories, child-care warehouses or imposed curricula.

Have you ever attended an unconference before?
I helped organize EdCamp NYC (and will likely do so again) and I also attended the recent Teach Meet NJ.

If you were to lead a session at Edcamp, what would it be about?
It would be about doing away with our common current conception of school as a place instead of a function.
