Meet Rita Sorrentino, Elementary Computer Teacher

If you’d like to be featured in our Meet the Edcampers series, fill out this form!

Name: Rita Sorrentino

How are you involved in education?
I am the computer teacher at Overbrook Elementary in Philadelphia, a K-5 school. I have been trying to use more web 2.0 tools with the kids (who always know more than I do or learn it more quickly) and the teachers (kicking and screaming).

What’s your ideal classroom or school like?
The school would have classrooms with adequate space for all types of learning: with technology, hands-on math and science, small and large group instruction areas. Every piece of equipment would work. The Principal would be an advocate of 21st Century Skills. The Chief Digital Officer would not have classes but would support all the digital needs of a well connected community of learners. Students would have access to technology at home and at school. Professional Development would be well planned and attended to support needs of students, parents and teachers. Students will spend time on projects and be allowed to initiate a topic of learning.Standardized test-taking would be kept to a minimum and used to inform practice and not to point and blame.
